Follow up -- Passion::2010

So, since I've had some time to really ponder this stuff, and go back to 'real life' aka school, work, etc, how have the things I've learned influenced me? Or, as Emily asked me, 'Where are [my] passions falling into place?' I've actually been taking some time lately just to think about these things, and spend time in the Word and in prayer asking God to really impact me not only through Passion but also through everything else I've been learning lately. So...
  • Something that I've been thinking about since before Passion is my schedule. I am a planner. I love lists, calendars, organizing things, looking forward to the future. But sometimes I get so caught up in the future I look past today. And sometimes I get so stressed about today or the next few days/weeks and I forget about my relationship with God and with other people. So I've been trying to be more purposeful in coming to campus, hanging out with people, and really being flexible with the little things. Additionally, I have tried to clear my schedule of unnecessary things. For me, this meant dropping an activity that I wasn't really participating in anyway, not trying to find another research position, and making a commitment to the things that I am involved in: New Life, my campus Christian group; Global Links, my awesome work-study job; DOCS, my pre-med group; and Kiltie Band, just as it sounds, band. And really making sure that my schedule allows time for me to spend time with God, in the Word, with all of my friends (not just ones i live with or am in a group with), and to still have time to be a good student - because this is a time of preparation for me, and I do need to do well.

  • Next, I feel like God has been using this time to teach me about myself. I really wanted to seek after what kind of person I am and want to be, so that my schedule and my friendships are a reflection of who I am and not what define me. I actually do like to write, hence the blog. And, I like to teach, which is why I'm a small group leader and I'm going to be a TA next semester. There is more to follow in another post...

  • A combination of these things is the way in which I spend my free time. I do enjoy watching television, but now I feel like sometimes I use it as an escape, or to avoid actually caring about other people's lives. Also, I know it would be a better use of my time to be in the Word, or in prayer, to be doing homework so I can spend time with people or get other things done which I feel like I need to do - cooking, chores, errands, blogging, keeping in touch with people. Therefore, I'm working on a balance - definitely cutting back the tv, and continuing to be productive in many forms -> In order to be a better student, room mate, friend, etc. and to be light in my world.

  • I also decided at Passion to help support Compassion International's Child Survival Program. This program is geared towards helping soon-to-be and brand-new mothers stay healthy in order to help their children survive, and thrive. The well-known Compassion Child Sponsor program only begins when children are age 4. However, a good amount of children don't survive until then. This program feeds and educates pregnant women so they can deliver a healthy baby and continue to breastfeed them, and also shows them how to sanitize their dishes, clean their house, and play with their baby. Additionally, it provides them support through a church and continues to offer spiritual education to the women as well. I'm excited about the program and even just being a small part of it. I'm also trying to remember to support the program through prayer on a regular basis. And while I'm looking to find a program to be involved in and volunteer with now, this is a simple way that I can start making a difference.

So in general, I'm just trying to let God continue to equip me, to change me, and to keep pointing me towards His path, and to use me to help point others there as well. I'm really excited because as a whole, our fellowship has grown tremendously through this experience, and I can't wait to continue to follow God through my life. I've kinda created a little motto for myself that I think sums it up pretty well:
  • Point Up
  • Learn In
  • Love Out

Passion::2010

From Jan 1-Jan 6, a group of 9 students from NewLife:CMU (including myself) went to the Passion Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Big name speakers and worship artists led this conference for 22,000 college students. I know this is a really, really long post, but I want to share everything I learned. I also know that this is a really weird first post for a blog, but it is both a combination of a lot of things God has been teaching me/I've been pondering for the last semester or so, and a launching point for where I want to go from here.

This is basically a recap of everything that really stood out to me from the conference. Dig in and enjoy!

This year, the theme was AWAKENING.

Main Session #1 -- John 11:1-44, 12:1-11 & 12:23-29 -- Louie Giglio
  • Jesus isn't afraid of the great odor behind the closed tomb. He says, "Move the stone."
  • "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
  • The magnitude of Mary's response matched the magnitude of the wake-up call.
  • "But if it dies, it produces many seeds"
  • Let's stop hitting the snooze button on our walk with God.

Song -- Awakening -- Chris Tomlin

Ephesians 5:14 sprang to mind: "Wake up O Sleeper, Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." This had been on my mind also, as I had just listened to 'Sleeper' by Everyday Sunday on a CD on the way down to Atlanta [From Streelights Mix - Ben B].

Community Group -- Colossians 1:15-20 -- Aaron Coe
  • We were created both by Him and for Him
  • Visible and Invisible: This includes emotions, beliefs, language; things too small to see, things too big to see, etc.
  • He holds all things together: the laws of the universe: physics, science, human interaction, etc.

Main Session #2 -- Hebrews 13:20-21 -- Beth Moore
The 4 Meanings of Equip in Greek
  1. Prepare - God has been preparing us since before Creation
  2. Adjusting, Fitting - new situations -> new character -> His image; We may not feel like we "fit" in many situations, but that doesn't mean we aren't supposed to be there.
  3. Repairing - mend, repair, reset disjointed bones - we will not be the same 10, 20, years from now. Ps - did you know your skeletal system is constantly repairing itself to adjust to new living conditions? Every 10 years, your bones are recalcified.
  4. Filling, Completing - He fills us with the Holy Spirit.

Breakout #1 -- Habitudes -- Tim Elmore
Images that inspire leadership
  • 10% skills, 90% character - leading begins with being, not doing.
  • Character = Self-discipline + emotional security + core values + personal identity
  • Discoveries to make about other people you are leading: strengths/weaknesses, triggers (what motivates them to act), personality, and learning styles
  • Floods v. Rivers: Floods have no boundaries, are shallow, dirty, and destructive. On the other hand, rivers go 1 direction, have clear banks, and are helpful to the ecosystem. Don't be 5 miles wide and 1 inch deep; 'say no if you are going to flow.'
  • Leaders need to constantly be pouring into the next generation of leaders - Who's your Joshua (2 Timothy 2:2)
  • Work smarter, not harder
  • Put your big rocks in your schedule/priorities first
  • Find out how much it's going to cost before you get in.
  • The atomic bomb implodes before it explodes. Jesus took 12 guys for 3.5 years before sending them out into the world.

Song -- Beautiful the Blood -- Fee

Song -- Healing is in His Hands -- Christy Nockles

Main Session #3 -- Isaiah 66:2 -- Francis Chan
  • How often do we tremble at God's Word?
  • The Word of the Lord reigns forever.
Community Groups -- Colossians 1:26-2:8 -- Aaron Coe
  • Share your story
  • We have the fullness of Christ IN us.
  • Retraining our minds to think on things above
Main Session #4 -- Daniel 6:3-5 -- Andy Stanley
  • It is a mistake to figure out what you're going to do before you decide who you are going to be.
  • Be a leader worth following.
  • Who you are on the inside = how people will remember you.
  • How do you become that person?

Breakout #2 -- Hebrews 13:15-16
Worship & Justice
  • God is never caught off guard with the problems the world faces.
  • Was faith going to be stronger than fear?
  • Passion = the difficulty you are willing to go through to accomplish your goal.
  • Don't be overwhelmed with [the amount of] need: it's not an obstacle, its an opportunity.
  • Being worshipfully missional for justice
  • Compassion = mercy with boots on
  • Their actions completed the integrity of what they were singing.
  • At the end of the day, did you care about someone today?
They also had a huge "Do It Now" area with walk-throughs for 12 different Christian Organizations with opportunities to learn about their program and also to donate. The idea was that by each doing a small part, 22,000 of us could have a huge impact on our world. The results were astonishing: together, we gave a total of almost $1.4 million to organizations that would not only heal the physical and emotional aspects, but also the spiritual. This was totally my favorite part of the conference - God really spoke to me specifically, but very differently than the way I thought He was going to.

Main Session #5 -- John Piper
Is God an Egomaniac?
  • Is it right for God to be jealous for His glory?
  • God is passionate about His glory
  • WWe were made for God's glory
  • God is not man-centered, He is God-centered.
1. Eternity Past - Ephesians 1:4-6
  • Self-forgetfulness = our greatest joy
  • we were created to know somebody
2. Eternity Future - John 17:24
  • If Jesus is the most glorious, why wouldn't he ask for us to see Him?
3. Cross - the intersection. Romans 3:23-26
  • Sin = something is more desirable than the glory of God
  • Christ had to die to vindicate His glory, to overcome sin, to be able to pardon sin.
  • This is for His glory.
  • *The foundation of salvation is God's worth.*
  • We will have an eternity of self-forgetfulness when we see the glory of God
  • God's renown = our desire because God's renown = God's desire.

Community Groups -- Isaiah 26:8 -- Aaron Coe
268 Generation Declaration
  1. Passion to know God above all things
  2. Love for the local expression of His Church
  3. Unity among believers that amplifies His name
  4. A desire to see Christ celebrated where I live
  5. Willingness to shine the gospel to all people

Main Session #6 -- Phillipians 2:1-18 -- Louie Giglio
  • Goal: to have the same way of thinking as Christ did
  • *To the glory of God the Father*
  • Dying to the self-trying
  • Hold onto and hold out the word of life
  • We will always have the scars but the wounds have healed
